Yesterday Tiger Woods shot a 71 (-1) at Augusta National Golf Club for the 2022 Masters Tournament in the 1st round in his return to golf since his horrific car accident in February of 2021. Today on the first hole Tiger tapped in for bogey after missing about a 12-foot putt to save par.
On the 2nd tee, he hit a fairway bunker on his 2nd conservative hole. I do need to mention the wind is brutal in Augusta, Georgia today with winds at upwards of 20+ MPH. Tiger had a spectacular shot out of the bunker to set him up for a good look 109 yards from the hole on the Par 5 2nd. His 3rd shot was just a little short of the hole to set Woods up for an uphill putt and missed it by a matter of inches. Tiger saved par on the 2nd to stay even (E)
We move on to the Par 4 3rd hole and Tiger pulls the iron out of his bag for the safe play and puts the ball in the fairway. 127 yards out Woods says “wow look at that thing” referring to the ball and the wind carrying it forcing him to miss the green. His 3rd shot is going to be extremely hard. Straight downhill right off the green with a slope leading off the green on the opposite side of the hole location he used a 5 iron to chip onto the green and with the incredible touch that only Woods has. He sets himself up for a beautiful par save but pulled his putt for another bogie. (+1) through 3.
The par 3 4th hole is the next challenge Tiger faced today and it was a doozy. Tiger ultimately finished the hole with a bogie to put him at +2 after starting the day -1.
Flowering Crab Apple is the next hole also known as hole 5 it’s one of the longest Par 4 holes on the course. Tiger hit his tee shot into the woods 280 yards. Lays up for a beautiful shot on his 2nd attempt leaves his ball at a 14-foot par look and misses it just a little right to tap in for his 3rd consecutive bogie. +3 after 5 holes.
Hole number 6 is a downhill Par 3 things are getting serious for Tiger Woods he’s taken his sweater off and he’s trying to avoid the dreaded cut. The 5 time Green Jacket winner has never missed the cut at Augusta National in his career. Tigers’ tee shot on the 6th was a great shot leaving him with a long birdie putt. On his putt, he hit an absolute beauty with his Scotty Cameron putter we’ve all come to love but ultimately leaves it a little short to tap in for par. Still at +3 after 6.
Moving on to the 7th hole Woods on the very straight Par 4 7th hole hits a great drive to put him in the middle of the fairway his best drive of this 2022 Masters. 123 yards from the hole on his 2nd shot Eldrick (Tiger) hit his 2nd consecutive green and has a good look at birdie but pushes it a little long but saves for par. Still +3 through 7
Hole 8 which is a Par 5 Tiger pulls driver and hits a nice drive but just escapes from being caught in the rough. In his 2nd shot, Woods hit 3 wood and puts it right next to the green. Tiger seems to be getting back in his groove for now. Chipping for Eagle he leaves a great shot to set him up for a 2-foot tap in for birdie. Woods is now at +2 through 8 holes.
On the last hole on the front 9 the 9th hole if you will, Tiger Woods seems to have his mojo back coming off of a birdie on the 8th hole Woods hits an excellent drive to start the hole. Tigers’ 2nd shot wasn’t all that great he missed the green but he has a decent shot just off the green. He saves par and finishes his front 9 with a +2.
