Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl: A Night of High Stakes Rivalry
On Tuesday, December 19, at 9 p.m. ET, the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl will serve up a sizzling competition between the UTSA Roadrunners and the Marshall Thundering Herd. With ESPN’s Jorge Sedano, Rocky Boiman, and Dawn Davenport covering the event, the bowl promises to be a thrilling spectacle of strategic plays and athletic prowess.
A Peek at the Past
Despite being a relatively new addition to the bowl lineup, the Frisco Bowl has already carved its space in the annals of college football. Originally known as the Miami Beach Bowl in 2014, it was relaunched as the Frisco Bowl in 2017. The bowl has seen its fair share of drama, particularly when Louisiana Tech trounced SMU in the inaugural game.
This year’s faceoff marks the fourth encounter between UTSA and Marshall, with Marshall currently leading the series 2-1. The two teams competed in Conference USA for three seasons before moving to their respective conferences. UTSA managed to squeeze out a win in 2017, but Marshall has victories under its belt in 2013 and 2018.
The Roadrunners’ Journey
UTSA, under the leadership of Head Coach Jeff Traylor, is making its fourth consecutive appearance in Bowl Season and its fifth appearance in a bowl game. Despite their loss to San Diego State in the 2021 Frisco Bowl, the Roadrunners have been consistently impressive, especially with their seven-game winning streak this season.
The Roadrunners’ stellar performance extends to the players themselves. LB Trey Moore was named The American’s Defensive Player of the Year, and QB Frank Harris, a veteran with more than 14,000 yards of total offense to his name, is a formidable presence on the field. Also noteworthy is WR Joshua Cephus, who has 82 receptions for 1,049 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall, on the other hand, has a commendable history in bowl games. They are making their 19th bowl appearance and have a winning record in previous bowl appearances. Despite a tumultuous season, the Herd managed to secure their bowl eligibility, thanks to a victory against Arkansas State in their final regular season game.
Marshall’s strong performance is bolstered by players like DE Owen Porter, who enters Bowl Season with five sacks and 15 tackles for loss, and WR Jayden Harrison, who leads the NCAA with an average of 31.9 yards per return. The Herd’s offensive strategy also stands out, with eight players having over 200 receiving yards each.
A Nail-Biting Prediction
The game promises to be a close one, with both teams boasting strong records and a history of competitive play. However, given UTSA’s recent form and their impressive lineup, they are marginally favored to win. The predicted score is UTSA 38, Marshall 35. Regardless of the outcome, the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl is sure to be a thrilling contest, a true testament to the intensity and passion of college football.
