Redbirds To Honor Memphis Red Sox
There are times when what is old is new. We spoke with Dr. Keith Wood on this topic as he enlightened and educated 4 Star Sports on some Memphis professional baseball history. In the case of the Memphis Redbirds, this is precisely what they intend to do on August 10th. On that night, the Redbirds will be the Red Sox. Not the Boston Red Sox, but the Memphis Red Sox as the Redbirds honor the Negro League Baseball team as they participate in the MiLB’s The Nine. We will take a look at the team, how long they played, and what the modern-day Memphis team has planned to honor the legendary team.
The Red Sox blessed the Memphis city with 20 years of play between 1923 and 1948. In these years we would see legends of the diamond such as Carl Glass, Josh Gibson, Steel Arm Tyler, Pinky Ward, and legendary country music artist Charlie Pride who would pitch in the 1957 season. Memphis would win 577 games and one Negro American League Championship in the team’s tenure.
Memphis would compete, from 1923-1930, in the Negro National League, one in the Negro Southern League, in 1932, and in the Negro American League from 1937-1948.
The Nine announced before the 2022 season, will recognize and honor numerous Black pioneers and trailblazing civil rights leaders in all 120 MiLB communities, ensuring the heroes of the past and their contributions continue to be celebrated through ceremonies and events at MiLB ballparks and in the community.
The team will wear a modern version of the Memphis Red Sox uniform to honor the hometown Negro League ball club. Fans can bid on the MLB-authenticated jerseys at a silent auction during the game. Following the game, auction winners will go down to the field to grab the jersey off the back of each respective player. The team will include a ceremony on the field during the pregame to further honor the Red Sox.
Fans wanting to purchase tickets can do this from the Redbirds website and the price during the flash sale is only $10.
