The University of Memphis Names Dr. Ed Scott as Next Athletics Director

Memphis has found its 14th Athletic Director. The university announced that Dr. Ed Scott is its next Senior Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. This role will be put into effect on July 22, 2024, with an introductory press conference scheduled for this Friday, June 27th.

Before Memphis, since 2022, Scott has served as the Deputy Athletics Director at the University of Virginia. While in Charlottesville, Scott would oversee sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, and equity and inclusion among the many responsibilities,

Before his time with the Cavaliers, from 2016, Scott would take over as AD at Morgan State as they were just levied with NCAA violations. With this, Scott was able to improve the program while navigating the waters with the NCAA. With this work, Scott would be named the 2021-22 Cushman & Wakefield Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors.

Bill Hargrave, UofM President, would say “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Scott and his family to Memphis.” and would go on to say “Our goal in this extensive search was to find a forward-thinking, transformative leader with the vision to help us achieve the full potential of Tiger Athletics. While there were many exceptional candidates, we found that leader in Dr. Scott. We are fortunate to have him join the Tiger Family, and we look forward to continuing toward our promising future in athletics under his guidance.”

Scott would have the following to say on the new position with Memphis.

The University of Memphis is a destination for me, and it has been on my radar for some time.”

With exceptional student-athletes, coaches, and staff that have the backing of a proud and motivated city, the opportunity is here to accomplish great things as we continue forward in a new era of intercollegiate athletics. I want to thank President Hardgrave for giving me this opportunity. My family and I are excited to join Tiger Nation.”
