Jaykwon Walton performed a standout performance, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to guide the Memphis Tigers to a 105-98 overtime win over Trenes Des Este on Friday night at Eleoncio Mercedes Arena.
The 6-foot-7 guard, who hails from Columbus, Georgia, delivered time and again for the Tigers, making 10 of his 17 shot attempts and going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. His efforts were instrumental in the Tigers’ victory, as he led a balanced offensive attack that saw five players score in double digits.
Complementing Walton’s performance, Jordan Brown added 14 points and five rebounds, while Jayden Hardaway chipped in with 13 points. Nick Jourdain contributed 12 points and five rebounds, and Ashton Hardaway was close to a triple-double with 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Every member of the nine-man Tigers roster who suited up saw game time. Jahvon Quinerly was just one point, and one assist shy of a double-double, ending the game with nine points and nine assists in 37 minutes of play.
Memphis was dominant on the boards, pulling down a total of 50 rebounds, with five players snagging at least five each.
On the defensive end, the Tigers held Trenes Des Este to a shooting percentage of just 38.6, including a paltry 6-for-43 from three-point territory. They also forced 17 turnovers, further stifling the opponents’ offense.
The Tigers’ own shooting was considerably more effective. They hit 50 percent of their shots from the field (39-of-78) and 41.4 percent from deep (12-of-29).
The Memphis Tigers will look to continue their momentum when they face off against the Dominican Select Team at 4 p.m. CT this Sunday.
