Game One Recap
Marsh improved to 3-0 on the season, and the big fly took the wind out of the Surge’s sails with a 5-1 win in game one.
Alec Marsh rang up a season-high nine batters, and the bottom of the order took care of the Wind Surge in Game One of their double-headers Friday night with a 5-1 victory.
How did It happen?
Wichita used the small ball tactics to plate the game’s first run with a fielder’s choice RBI by DaShawn Keirsey Jr. to give the Wind Surge a quick 1-0 lead.
The Naturals said that two could play the small ball game too. First, Jieson Guzman singled to right field and pushed across John Rave to tie it up. Jorge Bonifacio wanted in on the action and drove in Luca Tresh from second base to take a 2-1 lead.
The big fly in the 5th inning would ultimately become the difference in the game’s final score. Bonifacio took a 3-1 offering from Chad Donato to deep left field, and Guzman scored on the play to extend the Natural’s lead to 4-1. Parker Bates smashed the first pitch he saw from Donato for an RBI triple that he smashed to deep right field, and Morgan McCullough scored to make it 5-1.
Donato’s night was finished, and his line was not good, with five runs on eight hits over three and third innings. He struck out three batters in the loss, his third of the season.
Besides the bottom-of-the-order production, the game’s big story was Alec Marsh and his stellar performance. Marsh stacked up a season-high nine punchouts at the plate tonight to rack up his third win. He issued a walk and gave up a run over six innings of work.
That bottom of the Natural lineup, 5-9, was on fire, and the extra day of rest made a difference. They racked up 7 of the team’s nine hits, three of their five runs, and accounted for all five RBIs. They were led by Jorge Bonifacio, who went 2-3 at the plate with three RBIs, and he scored a run in the win.
